Kratie is a small town 109 km from Kampong Cham (two-hour drive). It is so small that you can walk or hire a motorcycle driver to take you to any place. Tourist attractions include Phnom Sombok (a temple north of Kratie), Sambor (a pre-Angkorian site with many temples), and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, which occasionally hosts concerts. The highlight of Kratie is the presence of Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong on the outskirts of the city. You can also visit basket weaver villages, the largest being Chheu Teil Ploch. Kratie is becoming more and more popular with backpackers and offers reasonably priced accommodation.
About 10 km from the city center, Campi is an address known for its freshwater dolphins: Irrawaddy. It is a rare species, genetically close to the killer whale, that was identified late 19th century. They can be found near the coasts and estuaries of Southeast Asia. They are also visible between the Laotian border and Kratie city.
It is an impressive place that looks like Luang Prabang in Laos. There is a pagoda at the top of the mountain, many statues of Buddhist monks on guard duty along three staircases, all in lush vegetation. You have to climb the stairs leading to the temple, count nearly 300 steps to reach it.
Located in front of the city of Kratie, Koh Trong is a small island (7 km) full of charm and authenticity, the essence of rural Cambodian life. Hop on a bike, the most pleasant way to explore this place, and ride on a wooden path, lined with banana and mango trees. Admire typical Cambodian stilt houses, watch the locals relaxing in hammocks (which seems to be a great Cambodian passion!) or be surprised by chickens, a chicks family or cows crossing the road! Turn your head and enjoy the view of idyllic beaches.
